Land of Two Suns

This is the land
of two suns
Where trees
never die
Like starfish
once cut down
Once even single root
will grow again
Rejuvenated, by
their everlasting soul
This is the land
where trees
never die

– Shelley Lowell

Once There Were Trees

Once There Were Trees

2 panels, back to back,  free standing,  80 x 30 inches,
acrylic on wood, 2006
Giclees available upon request.

Once There Were Trees

Once there were trees
every where
They lined city streets
softened
man-made facadesBent, curved, arched
over country lanes
cooling hot asphaltEncircled lakes,
streams, rivers, roads, highways,bywaysCovered mountains
thick in growth
day turned night beneath their leafy canopy

Flowering trees adorned
front-yard lawns
Graceful lace
swayed in the summer breeze

Slowly, insidiously
they disappeared
one by one
two by two
three by three

No one seemed to care
until there were none

Monuments built
Homage to the tree
They fell in disrepair
Disappeared

Only their shadows remain

Run With The Wind

Run With The Wind

12 x 24 inches, oil/wax on canvas, 2009
Giclees available upon request.

Yearning

Oh, to run
With the wind
Jostle her
Tease her
Race her
And win!

It thrills me to watch
Upright beings
So small against her power
Taunt her
With their cycle rides

Flying downhill
Cutting air like laser light
Leaving that haughty wind
Breathless
Then racing with her
Speeding faster than she
Beating her at her game!

Yes, it thrills me to watch
But oh, what bark I would give
What limb I’d gladly lose
To just once
Be free from ground
So deeply rooted
Race the wind
And win!

– Shelley Lowell

Fiery Sun

Fiery Sun

18 x 36 inches, oil/wax on canvas, 2010
Giclees available upon request.

Fiery Sun

Imagine
summer’s sun
intensified
a thousand times
scorching
burning
frying
cracking
Earth’s crust

Imagine
summer’s sun
intensified
a thousand times
rain burbling
boiling
blistering
all it touches

Imagine
Earth
void of life

This is summer
future
200 years
Man’s insatiable
lust for profit
manifested
desolation

– Shelley Lowell

Moon Harvest

Moon Harvest

10 x 20 inches, oil/wax on canvas, 2009
Private Collection. Giclees available upon request.

Moon Harvest

Fog rolled in
Full moon high
Seeds dormant
Buried centuries past
Sprouted
Bursting forth
Piercing earth’s crust

Massive melons grew
Expanding
expanding
expanding
Thick skin stretched, cracked
Split open

Exploding seedlings
Showered barren dunes
Everywhere
Growing as they fell
Forming leaves, buds, flowers
Instantly naked, parched powder
Turned lush flowering fields

To this day
I remember
The last survivor of my species
Rejoiced

I lived to see this night!
Roots tingled with delight

That night
So long ago
Heavy with mist
Came the dawning of new life
After man’s final destruction
